Introduction to Homeopathic Medicine By Sheri Nakken, R.N., MA, Classical Homeopath

Homeopathy is a very complete medical system that works with the whole person and helping the body get rid of the disturbance that the vaccine may have caused. Homeopathy works best if you work with a qualified Classical Homeopath and not someone who dabbles in it or mixes it with other things (like herbs, kinesiology, etc.). It is a complete system in itself and doesn't work well unless done in what is called a Classical way.

There is no one remedy for everyone. Homeopathy works with the individual by looking at everything about that person. A particular remedy is then chosen depending on all the symptoms and characteristics of that person.
Homeopathy works with minute, dilute and shaken substances. The homoepath would meet with you or you and your child. He/She would ask you a multitude of questions to get a clear picture of everything about you or your child as well as observe him/her.

She will want to know:
Every symptom
When is she better or worse
What makes him better or worse
What preceded this if there is a known event
What type of weather is she better or worse in; heat, cool, humid, hot, etc.
What time of day/night is better or worse
What foods does he like/dislike
All behaviors/personality traits
All about physical appearance
All about emotions/mental symptoms
How she interacts or doesn't interact
How he sleeps - does he prefer to sleep on sides, back, abdomen, etc.
Does she prefer warm or cool drinks Does she tend to be cold or hot
And on and on until a very complete picture of him is obtained
Especially extremely unusual symptoms
And more

The homeopath will then choose a remedy that fits his total picture. What I mean by this is: Each substance that is a homeopathic remedy has the ability to cause certain symptoms in a healthy person - ie. Arsenic will cause a certain set of symptoms if someone takes a poisonous dose. If your child had the symptoms that look like he had taken Arsenic, then Arsenic would be the remedy for him in very minute amounts. Now we know your child didn't take Arsenic but his/her symptoms match those of Arsenic and therefore Arsenic is his/her remedy. It works like that with all the remedies - more than 2,000 have been tested.

How these remedies are tested is called a proving. Over the last 150 years people have taken these substances in just the amount to cause symptoms in their bodies, mind & spirit and have recorded these symptoms in a controlled way - this is called a proving. These symptoms have been recorded in a vast index called a materia medica and indexed in reperatories.

When the homeopath comes up with all the symptoms for you or your child, she will choose the most characteristic (unusual) symptoms for him/her and the most limiting symptoms for him/her and find the remedy that most matches his/her symptom picture. This remedy has been greatly diluted and for what we call the higher potencies (diluted a lot), if they were to test the substance, no single molecule of the original substance would be detected after a certain dilution. But we know the substance was there to begin with and it has only been diluted. This substance is also shaken in a certain way which seems to be very necessary.

Physicists are studying homeopathy to see if they can figure out how it works but no one is sure yet. We are sure that it works from experience since the middle 1800's. But how is still a mystery. It probably is something like the energy or vibration of the substance is imprinted in the water solution and works on an energy level in the person. But this is Quantum Physics. It doesn't matter to us how, but that it does work and we have a long tradition of experience that it does.

It seems that the body sometimes produces a certain set of symptoms when it has undergone a stress or exposure to something and is not able to handle it. A certain pattern of symptoms appears, individual to the person. These symptoms are the body's best attempt at getting back into balance. The best attempt and the safest for the organism.

What happens in allopathic (the medicine we grow up with) medicine is symptoms are looked at as bad and are suppressed or gotten rid of and it is assumed the person is cured or healed.
But in homeopathy symptoms are looked at as the body's attempt to heal itself and if symptoms are suppressed or gotten rid of (like with antibiotics, Tylenol, anti-fungal creams, steroid creams, antibiotic ointments like Neosporin!, etc.) we are fighting the body's own healing mechanism. This is obvious to us now with a fever - if you suppress it with Tylenol, you are fighting the body. It is the SAME WITH ANY SYMPTOM the body has. You are fighting the body's attempt to heal itself. When the symptoms are suppressed it just drives the imbalance deeper into the person - into a more serious, deeper area. For example if an infant has eczema and steroid creams are put on its body to suppress the skin rashes, they often develop asthma later. Most allopathic medicine acts this way - in a suppressive way - ie. antibiotics, surgical removal of organs or growths, wart removal, etc.

Homeopathy works with the symptoms. The remedy chosen would cause the same symptoms in a healthy person and it appears that the remedy that matches the symptoms actually assists the symptoms by giving them an extra push. We seem to get stuck in certain symptoms and are unable to get out. They don't heal us, we just are stuck - like a stuck record. The answer is to help them out.

Homeopathy is best when practiced by a professional homeopath who is a qualified, classical homeopath. Qualified means they've taken a specific qualifying exam which is extremely difficult and comprehensive. Classical means the homeopath follows the principles set down by Hahnemann, the 'developer' of homeopathy, in the Organon, and others who came after him and stayed with original principles. The classical homeopath would only use one remedy at a time and not mix remedies or therapies. Homeopathy doesn't work well with any other system for the most part and is most effective when practiced alone by a professional qualified classical homeopath. (Usually better also if not an MD - MD's still seem to have difficulty leaving the 180 degree different view of illness/symptoms that allopathic medicine has). But that is not 100% (there are a few who are excellent). Also some naturopaths specialize totally in homeopathy and that would work, but someone who doesn't do homeopathy exclusively would not do justice to homeopathy or your child (they may not even realize that, thinking they can mix and match therapies)

Steve Waldstein R.S.Hom. (N.A.) Classical Homeopathy, Inc, has developed a list of classical homeopaths click on Find a Homeopath. I now maintain this list.please let me know if any of them are not reachable
It would even be well worth travel some distance for the initial session (price varies depending on location and if MD or not - usually $200 - up (also these prices are usually flexible - talk to the homeopath). Initial session is 1 - 3 hours. After that you may be able to do follow-ups over the phone (my homeopath allows this). The first session is usually best in person (although some people would do by phone or by phone if you are videotaping the session so the homeopath can see you or your child). The later sessions cost $40 - $200. You probably will see the homeopathy intially and then in 1 month (this varies) to begin with. I can't predict what you or your child would need. Remedies cost usually $5-10 or sometimes are included in the session.

When you look for a practitioner you basically have to be assertive and be informed ahead of time and ask a lot of questions to determine if they are qualified, classical, etc. They should have attended a 3-4 year program of some sort & worked with a mentor and be full time practitioners with a lot of experience. Also a (NA) Nash or CHC certification is a good guide. It doesn't matter if they've treated whatever you or your child may be 'diagnosed' with as homeopathy doesn't work with diagnoses or disease names. It doesn't matter what the name of it is. What matters are the individual and characteristic symptoms for you or your child. The most important is that they have extensive education and experience. This is because homeopathy doesn't treat the classification that has been given you or your child, only works with the symptom picture unique to you or your child.
If it is something chronic or something that could be potentially serious, it is not something you can do on your own with a kit or remedies you buy over the counter. A kit is for minor acute, temporary things like sore throat, cold, diarrhea, etc. A one time thing. If you have recurring sore throats, etc, that may be a sign of something chronic and you really should see a practitioner. Also something deep and chronic or potentially life-threatening requires an extremely experienced dedicated practitioner. It is an art as well as a science.

I can't speak highly enough about homeopathy. It is making a comeback in the US. It was run out 'on a rail' in the early 1900's by the AMA and drug companies. It didn't decline because it didn't work. Very long horrible story. Basically homeopathic schools were denied funding with Rockefeller dollars (also medical schools that admitted women suffered the same fate). The money all went to male, allopathic schools. There were other issues too. It has made a comeback in the US since the 1970's and is growing rapidly because it works. It has always been strong in Great Britain (the queen and family have homeopathic physicians), Ireland, Europe, South Africa, India, Russia, & Central & South America.

An excellent beginning book is The Science of Homeopathy by George Vithoulkas to explain the rationale behind homeopathy in detail. Another good book if you want to start using remedies for minor acute or first aid situations is The Complete Homeopathy Handbook by Miranda Castro (this book also would help with understanding how homeopathy works but again not to be used for chronic, long term, deep conditions on your own). There are homeopathic kits you can get that would have the main remedies you would need for acute situations. I have the books in stock if you'd like to get either of them and can order the kit. But mostly I strongly urge you to check into finding a wonderful homeopath if you can.

Questions to as a person who says they are a homeopath to determine if they really are a CLASSICAL homeopath (of course post them WITHOUT the correct answers):
1. Where did you study homeopathy?
2. How long did you study?
3. Who did you mentor with?
4. Do you mix homeopathy with herbs, drugs, other things??? Or do you ONLY use homeopathic remedies?
5. Do you use just one remedy at a time?
6. How long do you wait to see if a remedy is working?
7. Have you read the Organon? If so, how often do you read it?
8. And you may want to ask how available they are in an emergency, nights, weekends.

Answers:
1. Should be a number of years 3 or more preferably and preferably an actual program (some of these are homestudy and some are attendance or a combination of both - but a specific program) or intensive study with another practitioner
2. See above
3. The better homeopaths have had a mentor, rather than only correspondence courses without guidance and structure.
4. A classical homeopath will ONLY use homeopathic remedies (vitamins are OK, too)
5. Answer should be YES
6. Should be a period of time or unknown, depends on if remedy is working. You don't want someone who just routinely tells you to take something 3 times a day, for example, for an extended period of time.
7. They should have read the Organon once and continue to study it - the best homeopaths try to read it through yearly, for example.

Principles of Homeopathy
In conventional medicine, the symptoms are considered to be a manifestation of the disease. The drugs are given to kill the bacteria causing it or to dampen the symptom of the condition. Homeopaths, on the other hand, see the symptoms as the body's attempt to heal itself. They see the symptom as a positive sign that the body's defense mechanism is trying to fight the underlying cause and by this reasoning, they insist that the symptoms should not be suppressed as we are working against the body's attempt to cure it.

The laws of homeopathy are the law of similars, the principle of minimum dose and prescription for the individual.

The Law of Similars
The principle that like shall be cured by like, or Similia similibus curantur. This principle, recognized by physicians and philosophers since ancient times, became the basis of Hahnemann's formulation of the homeopathic doctrine: the proper remedy for a patient's disease is that substance that is capable of producing, in a healthy person, symptoms similar to those from which the patient suffers.
In other words, a substance produces symptoms of illness in a well person when administered in large doses; if we administer the same substance in minute quantities, it will cure the disease in a sick person. Hahnemann suggested that this is because nature will not allow two similar diseases to exist in the body at the same time. Thus homeopaths will introduce a similar artificial disease into the body which will push the original one out. The dose is small so that there is no danger of any long term side effects.

The Principle of Minimum Dose
This principle states that extreme dilution enhances the curative properties of a substance, while eliminating any possible side effects. This is just the reverse of conventional drug philosophy where a minimum dose is required for effect. Starting from the conventional dose, as we decrease the concentration (or increase the dilution), the medicine become less and less efficient. But below a threshold, the medicine start getting potent again. Homeopaths uses this region of potency.

Whole Person Prescribing
A homeopath studies the whole person. Characteristics such as their temperament, personality, emotional and physical responses when prescribing a remedy, etc. are studied. So, a homeopath may treat different persons exhibiting the same symptom differently. (For example, two persons exhibiting flu like symptoms may get two different medication from the homeopath based on the appraisal of the mind body constitution.)

Laws of Cure
There are three laws of cure, They are:

- A remedy starts at the top of the body and works downward
- A remedy works from within the body outward, and from major to minor organs
- Symptoms clear in reverse order of appearance.

Application of the three principles of cure means that you will feel better emotionally before you will feel better physically.

Homeopathy: Contemporary Western homeopathic medicine, based on the work of the German physician and chemist Samuel Hahnemann some 200 years ago, aims to stimulate the individual's innate healing processes through the administration of minute "homeopathic" dilutions of specific remedies. Derived from the Greek homeo, meaning same, and pathos, meaning suffering, homeopathy essentially treats "like with like". The patient describes his or her symptoms in detail, with equal emphasis placed on both physical and psychological symptoms. The practitioner then prescribes very small, nontoxic doses of a selected substance that, at higher doses, would produce the same symptoms in a healthy person.
